Exercise 1

CURIOUS RESEARCHER
Exercise 1
STEP 1:
I am writing this blog to express why I think a writer should have a thesis before they begin to write.  The thesis is what the whole paper is based around, and it is also what your arguments are supporting.  I believe that a thesis is key to start to a successful blog.  If a writer must first understand there argument before writing.  A strong thesis leads to a strong paper.  If you know your thesis, the writing process of the paper will be smooth and less stressful.  You will stay on track instead of going on rabbit trails that your audience will mostly likely not be able to follow.  You must have a clear thesis to introduce your audience to what your paper is going to be about.  When you reference your thesis your audience will be able to follow along with the point of your paper and stay connected to the topic with greater ease.  In high school I was always taught that having a clear thesis is so important.  I would always start out with developing a thesis before I started writing.  I always found this very helpful.  It helped me stay on track with what I wanted to say.  A thesis is so important, and these are just some of the reasons why I think that it is very important to have a strong thesis before you start writing.

STEP 2:
In this blog I am going to be talking about why I think that not everything presented in textbooks is true.  There are so many different beliefs and opinions in the world.  Just because something is in a textbook does not mean it is true.  I am a Christian, so when I read a textbook that is evolution based I do not think it is true at all.  Readers need to realize that there are so many views in the world, and all the different views cannot be right.  A reader needs to take into consideration what they read; however, they also need to realize that they are reading what one particular person believes. Not everything you read is true.

  1. Hi Alyssa! I wonder if your opinion on needing a strong thesis at the beginning of a research project has changed since reading the first couple of chapters of Curious Researcher and since our class discussion on Wednesday? I think starting with researchable, analytical, problem-oriented questions is a more effective way to begin a research project because then you're open to learning and developing new insights -- not just proving your point. What do you think?

  2. Hi Professor Byxbe! I think my opinion has changed a little since reading through Curious Researcher and what we talked about in class. I was just always taught growing up that having a strong thesis before you started writing was key. For my next essay I know I am going to not start out with a thesis, but rather I am going to start with questions. It is all new to me to start a paper this way, but I am going to try it and see how it goes! Thanks for the insight and question to think about!
